The BMW M1 is one of BMW’s most iconic and historically significant vehicles. Produced between 1978 and 1981, it was BMW’s first M Division car and remains the only mid-engine vehicle the company has ever mass-produced. Initially developed for Group 5 racing, the M1 also served as a street-legal supercar, combining advanced engineering with timeless design.

Key Features of the BMW M1

1. Design

  • Exterior:
    • The BMW M1’s wedge-shaped body was designed by legendary Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, blending sharp angles with smooth curves.
    • Distinctive features include:
      • Pop-up headlights for aerodynamic efficiency.
      • A low-slung silhouette and flared wheel arches for a striking appearance.
      • Rear black louvered windows and a subtle integrated spoiler.
  • Chassis:
    • Built on a tubular steel space frame for rigidity and lightness.
    • The body panels were made of lightweight glass-reinforced plastic (GRP).
  • Dimensions:
    • The M1 measured approximately 4.36 meters in length, with a low profile ideal for aerodynamics.

2. Performance and Engine

  • Engine:
    • Powered by a 3.5-liter inline-6 engine (code: M88) with DOHC and a mechanical fuel injection system by Kugelfischer.
  • Power Output:
    • Street version: 273 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque.
    • Racing version: Output ranged between 470–500 horsepower, depending on the configuration.
  • Transmission:
    • A 5-speed manual transmission by ZF, sending power to the rear wheels.
  • Performance:
    • 0–60 mph in 5.5 seconds.
    • Top Speed: 162 mph, making it one of the fastest cars of its era.
  • Mid-Engine Layout:
    • A first for BMW, this layout provided exceptional balance and handling dynamics.

3. Handling

  • Suspension:
    • Fully independent with double wishbones at all four corners.
    • Coil springs and anti-roll bars ensure precision handling.
  • Braking:
    • Equipped with ventilated disc brakes on all wheels.
  • The M1's mid-engine design and rear-wheel-drive configuration provided a perfect weight distribution, making it agile and composed on both road and track.

4. Interior

  • Driver-Focused Cabin:
    • Minimalist yet functional, emphasizing performance over luxury.
    • High-quality materials, including leather and soft-touch plastics.
  • Instrumentation:
    • Analog gauges providing essential information, with a central tachometer for sporty appeal.
  • Limited passenger space, with a snug 2-seat configuration.

5. Racing Legacy

  • The M1 was initially developed for Group 5 racing, but delays led to its debut in the Procar Championship, a one-make series supporting Formula 1 events.
  • In the Procar Championship, legendary drivers like Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet competed in M1s.
  • The racing version of the M1 remains a legend in motorsports, showcasing BMW’s engineering prowess.

Limited Production and Exclusivity

  • Only 453 units were built during its production run, including 399 road-going versions and 53 race cars.
  • This limited production makes the M1 one of the rarest and most sought-after BMWs ever made.
